Intercomparison of Cloud Properties in DYAMOND Simulations over the Atlantic Ocean

نویسندگان

چکیده

We intercompared the cloud properties of DYnamics Atmospheric general circulation Modeled On Non-hydrostatic Domains (DYAMOND) simulation output over Atlantic Ocean. The domain averaged outgoing longwave radiation (OLR) is relatively similar across models, but net shortwave at top atmosphere (NSR) shows large differences among models. models capture triple modes systems corresponding to shallow, congestus, and high clouds, although their partition in these three categories strongly model dependent. simulated height shallow congestus peaks more robust than peak whereas water content exhibits larger intermodel does ice content.

Contributions of Atlantic Ocean to June-August Rainfall over Uganda and Western Kenya

This study investigates the contributions of Atlantic Ocean to June-August rainfall over Uganda and western Kenya (KU). The study has utilized the datasets including precipitation from the Global Precipitation Climatology Centre, North Atlantic Oscillation Index (NAOI), South Atlantic Ocean Dipole Index (SAODI), ERA-interim reanalysis, and the Atlantic Ocean Sea Surface Temperature (SST). Singu...

Cloud properties and radiative forcing over the maritime storm tracks of the Southern Ocean and North Atlantic derived from ATrain

[1] Annually averaged cloud properties, cloud radiative effects, and cloud radiative heating from 20° × 20° latitude‐longitude regions in the Southern Ocean (50°S, 135°W) and the North Atlantic (55°N, 25°W) are compared using quantities derived from measurements collected by active and passive remote sensors in the NASA A‐Train. The algorithm suite used to infer cloud properties along the nadir...

Simulations of Hydrographic Properties in the Northwestern North Atlantic Ocean in Coupled Climate Models

The performance of coupled climate models (CCMs) in simulating the hydrographic structure and variability of the northwestern North Atlantic Ocean, in particular the Labrador and Irminger Seas, has been assessed. This area plays an important role in the meridional overturning circulation. Hydrographic properties of the preindustrial run of eight CCMs used in the Intergovernmental Panel on Clima...

The effect of smoke, dust, and pollution aerosol on shallow cloud development over the Atlantic Ocean.

Clouds developing in a polluted environment tend to have more numerous but smaller droplets. This property may lead to suppression of precipitation and longer cloud lifetime. Absorption of incoming solar radiation by aerosols, however, can reduce the cloud cover. The net aerosol effect on clouds is currently the largest uncertainty in evaluating climate forcing. Using large statistics of 1-km r...

Aerosol Effects on Satellite Retrievals of Cloud Optical Properties in the South Atlantic Ocean

Satellite retrievals of cloud optical depth and effective radius are shown to be underestimated in the South Atlantic Ocean, where biomass-burning aerosols typically reside above low-level, liquid water stratocumulus clouds. A radiative transfer model is used to calculate top of the atmosphere (TOA) reflectances for a case where an aerosol layer is elevated above a liquid cloud in the South Atl...
